The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your partner and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like standard physical horror, but inside Together lies a intense meditation about our choices in loving one another.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The narrative commences when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and far away from his social circle. He fears the notion of completely losing his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

The couple confront the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can undertake right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
