Scene of the incident
A man was stabbed in the event, with the offender believed to have been shot by law enforcement.

Stunned witnesses have described the "awful" event occurring as a vehicle and knife attack left two people deceased and three others wounded outside a synagogue in Manchester.

Police said a vehicle was targeted towards individuals during the incident in Crumpsall and a man - suspected as the perpetrator - was shot by firearms officers and is also thought to be deceased.

A courier explained he witnessed what first appeared to be a car crash before realising there was an individual armed with a blade.

"It looked like a vehicle involved in a collision, so we believed it was a normal collision, but when we moved closer we saw a individual losing blood on the pavement. He was unresponsive, thought to be killed," he remarked.

"And then there was a man in near the car, he was lying on the floor, and there were a a number of bystanders on the street."

The man, who gave his name as Gareth, reported to a radio broadcaster: "Somebody shouted 'he's in the school or the synagogue' and then as we glanced across the individual had a blade and he was attacking the window, attempting to enter [the building], and within seconds the law enforcement came."

"Officers issued several cautions, he ignored them, so they shot at him. He fell to the ground and then he attempted to stand and then they discharged their firearms again."

The incident happened on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Judaism, in a neighborhood with a prominent Jewish residents.

Armed police at the scene
Armed police were responded to the scene.

Video posted on online platforms seemed to depict police officers directing weapons at a person sprawled on the floor outside the front of the synagogue.

The armed officers shouted at witnesses to "retreat" and "move on"

The suspect on the ground is observed beginning to rise before there is the noise of firearm discharge and they collapse.

A different individual was depicted lying motionless on the floor outside the building's entrance with evidence of injury near their skull.

Another witness, Shah, who lives behind the worship center, described observing a vehicle "just sort of rushing past and heading directly toward the members of the public."

"Then I had seen a man jump out and moving towards the people," he said.

"It proved quite distressing to be fair. And then after that I slowed down a little bit just to see what was going on and to try and call authorities."

"That person was emerging with a blade and he just started acting violently."

"It's truly frightening to be completely honest."

Neighborhood dweller Olivia Gold mentioned she had acquaintances who visit the worship center.

She told a media outlet: "It would have been very, very crowded. I reside nearby, but I've come over to give support. It's now just law enforcement handling the situation."

"I went outside to see what was happening because I noticed multiple aircraft."

"The situation is awful. We're a peaceful neighborhood, we want to be left in peace. We don't want any of this."

"I think the law enforcement reaction has been extremely effective. They responded really, really quickly."

Road closures near the scene
Nearby roads were cordoned off following authorities responded.

Chava Lewin, who identified as a religious Jew, lives next door to the synagogue.

She said: "I was outside and heard a impact noise and I believed it was possibly a explosion."

"I contacted an individual who explained she was traveling and saw a vehicle moving unpredictably and it crashed into the barriers [of the synagogue]."

"Immediately after he left the car he commenced assaulting nearby individuals. He attacked the protection personnel and sought access to the building. He was in the exterior area."

"Someone secured the entrance. Everyone is in complete disbelief."

Another man said observances had begun when the assault took place but the religious leader, who was conducting the prayers, kept his cool and he and others guided the attendees to safety.

He remarked: "They are true heroes."
