Catherine's Yearly Yuletide Service of Carols Spotlights Unsung Heroes

The Princess of Wales is hosting her customary Christmas carol concert at the historic Abbey, with a congregation comprising members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have helped their communities.

The sizable congregation will hear a mix of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from performers including award-winning actors.

A Theme of Love and Generosity

The focus of the event, held in the glowing Westminster Abbey on Friday afternoon, is kindness and showing love to others.

Among the guests will be a couple named the Cordiners, whose daughter died of a tumour, and who set up a charity, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to aid parents with a terminally ill child.

"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often discreetly and without words, and without any thought of thanks or praise, make an profound impact to the lives of others," the Princess expressed in a letter ahead of the concert.

A Steady Comeback

The Princess of Wales is continuing her own gradual return to the public eye subsequent to her illness and medical care, recently giving her first public speech for two years, in which she reflected on recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".

Music and Opportunity

Attendees entering the Abbey can listen to talented youth performers supported by the charitable trust Future Talent, established in part by the former royal to broaden opportunities for instrumental training.

Carys Wood, aged 18, who plays the trumpet and is from Wales, has been helped by the charity, with funding assisting with instruments, tuition, and transportation expenses - and she said it was "incredible" to be taking part in tonight's service.

"Pursuing music is often costly," Carys said. She is now a student at the prestigious music academy, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to cultivate their performance abilities.

A Family Affair

Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who plays the euphonium, will also be at the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many important people," she said.

Among the guests will be individuals spanning multiple eras.

That will include young Saphia Turner, nine, winner of a youth community award, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to collect donations for food banks.

Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment

The Abbey has been decorated with custom-created holiday decorations, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett helping to make them.

The musical lineup includes recording artist Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "the icing on the cake for us."

The Together at Christmas carol concert will be aired by television on December 24th.
